Did you know that acne can also affect your dogs and cats? Animal acne is usually caused by a bacterial infection and it can be quite uncomfortable for your pets. The most common places for pet acne is on the face, particularly around the chin. If you notice small pimple-type sores on your pets face, you should try these simple home remedies.

Keep It Clean

One easy way to prevent pet acne is to keep their face clean. Fill a bowl with warm water and add a small amount of antibacterial soap. Use a clean cloth to gently wash your pets face at least once a day. If your pet spends a significant amount of time outdoors, you should wash their face more often.

Heat it up

Heat is an excellent way to bring the acne to a head and release the bacteria locked inside. Wash your pets face with a mild detergent and rinse well. Soak a clean cloth in hot water and wring it out well. Place the hot compress on your pets face for 3 to 5 minutes. Repeat the process at least twice a day until the acne goes away.

Reach for the Aloe Vera

Aloe vera gel can reduce the inflammation associated with acne. It can also alleviate the pain and discomfort. If you have an aloe vera plant in your yard, simply cut a small piece off the plant and squeeze the gel onto the acne. If you don't have access to an aloe vera plant, you can purchase the gel in most drug stores. Apply the gel several times a day, especially after your pet scratches, to prevent infection.

Apply Calendula Oil

Calendula oil comes from the marigold family. The essential oil is beneficial in fighting infection and reducing inflammation. It will also speed up the healing process so your pets' acne will go away faster. Fill a bowl with warm water and add about 10 drops of calendula oil. Dip a cotton ball in the solution and apply a generous amount to the acne. Repeat the process at least three times a day to speed up the healing and prevent infection.

Acne can leave your pet feeling miserable. Treat the acne and help your pet feel better by utilizing the simple tips provided above. If your pet develops acne on a regular basis, be sure to speak to your veterinarian. They may have a health issue that you're not aware of.
